General ProfileTeaching
Curtis Greenidge is a proud native of Trinidad and Tobago. He developed a love for music at an early age, having come from a musical family. He fondly remembers spending days and nights in the steel pan yard and playing Mas at the annual Carnival celebrations in his home country. His first playing experience came under the direction of Mt. D’or Cultural Performers playing Djembe and percussion for local dance shows and performances. At age 12, Curtis won the Citibank “12 and under” competition in Trinidad for his accomplishments and performance on the drums. Soon after winning the competition, he became a member of the Malick Folk Performing Company. In 2001, Mr. Greenidge emigrated to Hartford, CT, where he taught and shared the culture.

Curtis is an active member of The Harford Steel Orchestra, where he has developed more steel pan playing skills. The Hartford Steel Orchestra has been a part of the West Indian Festival for many years, where Curtis has had the opportunity to arrange and orchestrate different composers’ music and bring it to life on the steel pan with a beautiful melody and rhythm. In 2010, Curtis began working with Artist Collective as a steel pan instructor, teaching the culture of playing the steel pan to children from the ages of 8 years to adults. He continued to showcase his talent through the love for music and his culture. Mr. Greenidge was also a steel pan instructor at The Interdistrict Steel Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Francisco Augustine. He had an opportunity to showcase his work at the annual Walk for Haiti Fundraiser.

In 2013, Curtis participated in a lecture and demonstration at The United Methodist Church, and soon after began working as a Steel Pan Instructor at the church. Curtis continues to showcase his passion for music and arranging various composers’ music through the steel pan.  Teaching his culture to children and adults will continue to be his main focus.
