Jeff Naftzinger is primarily interested in everyday writing and digital & multimodal composing. His current research seeks to understand how self-described “non-writers” define writing, what writing tasks they actually engage in, and what value they ascribe to those writing tasks. Jeff also researches ways to encourage the effective use of digital technologies in the composition classroom. In every course that he teaches, Jeff’s primary goal is to help students see how the concepts they are learning can help them think critically about, and compose critically for, the different purposes and audiences they will encounter in their academic, professional, and personal lives. To that end, he invites students to make connections between their previous experiences and understandings of composing—in their daily lives, in their majors, and in different genres and media—and put them in dialogue with current theories in composition and rhetoric.
