Dr. Livia Arndal Woods has taught literature and writing at the University of Michigan and the City University of New York (CUNY). She holds a PhD in English and a certificate in Women’s Studies from the CUNY Graduate Center where she completed a dissertation, “Heavy Expectations: Reading Pregnancy in the Victorian Novel,” now a book manuscript titled Pregnancy in the Victorian Novel. Her research – including her writing on teaching nineteenth-century literature – appears in Victorian Network, Nineteenth Century Contexts, Nineteenth Century Gender Studies, and is forthcoming from Women’s Writing. In her work with students, Livia is invested in articulating, exploring, and questioning the educational and disciplinary practices that shape how we learn and communicate. She is particularly interested in positioning these practices and the texts she teaches in their historical contexts, as possibilities for and expressions of the drive toward knowledge rather than fulfillments of that drive.
