Emily Cummins is an urban ethnographer with specializations in U.S. cities, infrastructures, and planning. Her work examines the processes of planning and revitalization in Detroit, focusing the ways in which social, political, and economic crisis shape social spaces in transforming cities.

She received her Ph.D. in Sociology in 2016 from Northeastern University in Boston and was a graduate Fellow at the Humanities Center in the 2015-2016 academic year. She joins the Center for Urban and Global Studies at Trinity as a Postdoctoral Fellow and will teach courses on urban studies, American cities, and ethnographic research methods. Her engaged ethnographic work informs her teaching and she encourages her students to learn about cities via conducting their own fieldwork in urban spaces.
