Laura Albanese graduated from the Pennsylvania State University Schreyer Honors College with degrees in English and Italian Language and Literature. Upon graduation, she moved to Italy to teach English, first in Umbria and then for nearly two years in Reggio di Calabria. In 2010, she began a Masters degree in Italian Studies at the University of Connecticut where she graduated in 2014.

As a language instructor, she incorporates communication in Italian right from the first lesson. This allows the students to become comfortable communicating in the language immediately. In the classroom, her use of Italian for nearly all interactions gives students as much exposure to the language as possible. This provides them the opportunity to develop problem-solving skills necessary to speaking a foreign language and is also important for other areas of study.

As a teacher, she is really invested in students’ success, in Italian as well as their individual areas of study. She wants students to feel comfortable to make mistakes and ask questions because these will help learning. Many lessons incorporate music, films or anecdotes about Italy. Study of language is not just limited to grammar rules and vocabulary memorization, but in learning the characteristics of language. Students are given access to a new people, a new culture and new ways of thinking.
