Abbas Varij Kazemi is a visiting scholar and assistant professor of sociology at the Center for Urban and Global Studies at Trinity College.  Kazemi earned his M.A in the sociology of religious intellectual movements from the University of Tehran and completed his Ph.D. in cultural sociology from the same university in 2005. His dissertation focused on local shopping centers and Tehranian everyday life. From 2005 to 2010 he served as assistant professor of sociology at the University of Tehran. His teaching and research focuses on media, urban spaces and everyday life in Iran and sociology of modern Islam. He is the author of Sociology of the Religious Intellectual Movement in Iran (Taarh – e- No, 2004) and Measures of Religiosity in Iran (2008), Cultural Studies, Cultural Consumption and Everyday Life (Jahat, 2007), and Iranian Everyday Life (Asheyan, 2008). Dr. Kazemi is a writer of a large number of essays in public and intellectual newspapers and magazines in Iran.  During 2012-2013, he worked and taught in Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at New York University. At Trinity Collage he will teach a course for the Department of Sociology and the International Studies program in spring 2014 and carries out research at the Center for Urban and Global Studies.
