Dr. Cullity’s primary teaching goal in any writing class is for apprentice writers to come away with a strong sense of their individual writing voices, a fundamental sense of ownership of their work, and the understanding that there’s no magic trick to writing except hard work. Giving a group of writers a safe space to evolve their distinctive voices is augmented by introducing them to authors who will further inspire them. Cullity highlights the importance of reading and analyzing great literature from around the world, and finds particular authors for particular apprentice writers in order to develop a firm respect for the number of literary influences with whom we can permanently connect. She aims to pass on the joy of writing that was given to her by many good author-teachers.
