Dr. Averna received a B.A in Psychology from the College of the Holy Cross and her M.A. in Counseling Psychology and Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from Boston College. She completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. She has taught a mix of developmental and clinical psychology classes and emphasizes the continuum of between normal and abnormal development. She is particularly interested in how early relationships with primary caregivers shape the nervous system and affect interpersonal relationships and mental health.
Dr. Averna views her job as one of teacher, mentor, and collaborative learner. She helps guide students as they navigate their way through the college experience and supports their personal and professional development. She enjoys inspiring students to follow their passions, develop their talents, and contribute to their communities.
