Dr. El Hachemi Bouali is a Thomas Meredith McKenna '48 Postdoctoral Fellow in the Environmental Science Program. His research focuses on the use of near-surface geophysics, particularly ground penetrating radar, to map the extent of subsurface contaminants and to develop a novel approach to monitor subsurface changes at contaminated sites. He focuses on applied methods, such as field mapping, geophysical surveys, and remote sensing, to conduct interdisciplinary research in topics like natural hazards and long-term monitoring of surficial and shallow subsurface (critical zone) processes. He conducted graduate work on the use of remote sensing to detect and monitor natural hazards, particularly landslides and subsidence.

El Hachemi's goal as an instructor is to cultivate a growth mindset in students and aims to complete three objectives with each class. First, to help students build their technical capacity through hands-on field/lab experience, problem-based learning, and repeat attempts on assignments to correct mistakes. Second, to maintain student's interest in science by providing real-world applications of classroom knowledge, linking lectures with current events, and using technology as an instrument for active learning. Third, to foster a sense of belonging so that all students, regardless of background, feel accepted and confident in their abilities. Outside the classroom, he actively conducts research in Connecticut and seeks students interested in developing projects involving field mapping, geophysics, natural hazards, and/or environmental contamination.
