David Sterling Brown discovered his passion for Shakespearean studies and English Renaissance literature as an undergraduate at Trinity College under the direction of Milla Riggio and Chloe Wheatley. While pursuing his doctorate at NYU, he expanded his knowledge of English Renaissance literature and assumed a minor field focus in African-American literature. Given his own disparate scholarly interests, David pushes his students to pursue the ideas that intrigue them most. He trains his students to close read texts and he encourages them to take intellectual risks with the connections they make. By discussing critical issues such as power, class, sexuality, homosociality/homosexuality, and race in the classroom, he enables his students to identify ways in which the past intrudes into and informs the present. At Trinity, David teaches a self-designed English Renaissance/African-American literature course entitled “(Early) Modern Literature: Crossing the Color-Line.”
