Symposium in Honor of International Women's Day: Building Bridges IV: Women, Prison, and the Arts


incarceratedAbstract: Through exhibits, presentations, panel discussions, and performances, this symposium examines the ripple effect of incarcerating women and the pivotal role of the arts as a catalyst for positive change.

This symposium is being held on March 8, 2008 at Mather Campus Center in honor of International Women`s Day.

ART EXHIBIT: "Talking Paintings" 4:00 to 5:00 PM
ART SPACE AT MATHER HALL
Talking Paintings is an interactive art exhibition created by the women at York Correctional Institution. The artwork considers the impact of HIV/AIDS on the women and those around them. Each panel contains a recorded artist`s statement.

Symposium held in conjunction with a Benefit Dance Performance

With opening remarks by Wally Lamb
The acclaimed performance piece based on reflections on time by the women at York Correctional Institution by the Judy Dworin Performance Ensemble and a cappella gospel singing group Women of the Cross, joined by formerly incarcerated women and family members of women at York, followed by a talk back with Wally Lamb, performers, and formerly incarcerated women.

Proceeds from Time In will benefit Interval House and college courses at York
