T: 6:30PM- 9:10PM Location: TBA Enrollment limited to 15 - Permission of Instructor (Elukin, Ext. 4264) NOTE: This course is taught in conjunction with Professor Elukin`s course (HIST 366) The History of the Book. Preference will be given to students who register for both courses as the subject matter, readings and activities will be linked. Interested students should contact Prof. Elukin for consent. This course is designed to introduce the student to the various processes involved in the creation of a book. Students will learn how to fold, sew and construct several books with different bindings. We will survey techniques of papermaking, ink formulation, type casting, and basic letterpress processes. We will create at least two books with content. The course will study not just the technology of book production but the book itself as an evolving object of design and art, particularly the survival of the book in a digital age. The subject matter for the course will be presented in many different ways including, but not limited to, lecture, demonstration, field trips and visiting lecturers.
