Susan has been excited about plant biology since high school, where she had to write a paper about GMOs. Since then, her excitement about science has only grown! Susan joined Trinity College as an Assistant Professor of Biology in 2017. She earned her BA at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN then completed a doctorate of Plant Breeding and Plant Genetics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 2011. She traveled to Davis, California to do a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the department of Plant Biology before returning to Macalester as a Visiting Professor for three years.

At Trinity College, Susan enjoys teaching and working with undergraduate researchers to learn more about plant stress tolerance in tomato plants and the model plant Arabidopsis. She combines her experiences in classical genetic research and bioinformatics with an interest in environmental stress responses, and uses tools like genetic engineering, plant growth and physiology, and gene expression to study plants’ growth during aluminum stress, cold stress, and other trying conditions. Susan’s goal is that students doing research with her will gain their own excitement for asking and answering great scientific questions!
