B.A., Univ. of Washington (2004)

Vincent Tomasso received his Ph.D. from Stanford in 2010 and his B.A. from the University of Washington in 2004. His research centers two aspects of the ancient world: ancient Greek poetry and the reception of antiquity by later cultures. He is working on a study of the reception of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey by imperial Greek poets from the first century CE onwards, especially in Quintus of Smyrna’s epic Posthomerica. A second project focuses on one-off references to antiquity in late 20th and early 21st century popular texts.

This dual focus has informed his approaches to teaching the languages and cultures of ancient Greece and Rome as both foreign and familiar to us now. Studying classical antiquity thus allows us to understand our past as well as our present.
