Irena Xhurxhi is currently pursuing her PhD in Economics at CUNY the Graduate Center. Since Fall 2014 she has been teaching at several colleges in NY such as Brooklyn College, Queens College and York College. Some of the courses taught include: Introductory Microeconomics, Introductory Macroeconomics, Introduction to Business Statistics, Quantitative Methods in Mathematical Economics and International Economics.

Her research focus is on Health and Labor Economics, particularly Economics of Substance Use and Abuse, Economics of Infant Health, Maternity Leave policies, Economics of Education, and Economics of Family, Marriage and Divorce. One of the projects she is currently working on looks at the social and economic determinants of divorce. In some other project she is collaborating with a system of hospitals to test whether consulting reduces the medical care costs of terminally ill patients.
In addition to research, Irena is also very passionate about teaching and sharing knowledge with her students. She continuously encourages them to ask many questions, voice their opinions, and participate in the discussion of  different policy evaluations.
